The long-awaited fight between former teammates Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley finally has a potential date, with the welterweights expected to meet at a UFC event on September 19th in Las Vegas Nevada.
Woodley was the first to announce the news via a post on Instagram. A lot of people with knowledge of the booking confirmed to MMA Fighting that the matchup is currently in the works for the Sept. 19 card, although contracts have not been issued or signed at this time.
UFC officials have not confirmed the matchup yet. The rivalry between Covington and Woodley stretches back several years after they were previously training partners at American Top Team in Florida.
Covington then went on a very public campaign against Woodley in hopes of scoring a welterweight title shot.
Tyron Woodley (19-5-1) is the former UFC welterweight champion. After defeating Darren Till by submission in 2018, Woodley has fallen in the past year as he’s dropped back-to-back losses to Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns.
He is still the #5 ranked welterweight in the UFC, and win here over Covington would catapult Woodley back towards title contention. A loss, however, and he could be staring at the dreaded three-fight losing skid.
Colby Covington (15-2) is the former interim UFC welterweight champion. The current #2 welterweight in the world and is coming off of a TKO loss to Usman in a hard-fought championship fight, but he was highly competitive with Usman and proved he’s an elite welterweight by nearly going the distance and stealing a decision from the champion.
A convincing win here over Woodley and Covington could very well be next in line to fight Usman once again. Despite having a history with Woodley, “Chaos” showed faith in the former champ. He presented his picks in association with MyBookie. However, if someone looks up at the track record of Colby, it turns out that Woodley may have a lot to worry about after the prediction.
“Straight off the billboard charts and back into our hearts, it’s my good friend Tyron Woodley. Usually, Tyron’s putting the fans to sleep. But tonight he is gonna make the fans some money. We all know Tyron’s washed up but he still has little in the tank to beat the dork named Gilbert. So go pound that Tyron Woodley Moneyline and make that bank accounts great again,”
